first off, Jojo played at the modern drummer festival, not me, so I have nothing to say other than, great performance, very cool, and innovative, what he is doing in NY is very unique, cool and hard. Take it from somone who creates drum n bass music, also as a drummer those beats are very tough to play. So many props to Jojo for what he is doing.

I dont know if this has been posted here before but here is a VERY INTERESTING history lesson on drum n bass music and a little bit about where electronic music production got its start. I found this very informational about how samplers and drums co-exist in this music scene....
here it is

16ths indeed. I was feeling it half time I guess.
I wish Drummerworld put a different clip from the MD fest. The solo is not the highlight. The rest of it is. There's another tune with some beautiful brush playing, and some really cool grooves in the other tunes too. As far as the solo itself, the guy's got some great facility and cool ideas I think. That's a hard temp to solo over.

Amazing facility, and ideas I agree. I also agree about the clips they chose. There are other aspects to Jojo drumming that shine through. Steve Coleman wouldn't have called him to sub for Gene Lake if otherwise.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Hey, just remember it was Gene that subbed for JoJo with SHT... nobody knew who Gene Lake was before that!

Now JoJo is being called to sub for Gene? Interesting!

JAW-DROPPING technique.I read somewhere that he's mostly self-taught!?
How can that be??I mean,c'mon you can't be at such a high level without having taken intensive lessons right?
I could be wrong tho'.What do you guys think?
I,myself,am a educated self-self taught player so to speak, but if he really is so that changes the game.It questions the whole education/self-tuition thing right??

I need input here guys.C'mon!

That was excellent... and awesome that he mentioned the '98 Modern Drummer video because they HAVE TO put that one to DVD - one of the most incredible performances I have ever seen. Man, JoJo is amazing. I gotta see that one again!

drumaddix, as for being self-taught - I think if you have the right amount of desire and discipline it could work out, but learning one on one with an experienced teacher/master is VERY valuable, you might find some short-cuts and greater knowledge. I come from both world really... self taught originally, then took some lessons, then back on my own. It's a cycle. I would recommend for everyone to find themselves a teacher they like though, what I learned in my 2-4 years of studying w/ teachers would have taked me 8-15 years to learn on my own - if ever! Start a new thread about this topic and you will get more feedback.

Just when I thought I had recovered from the one-handed roll he did in 1998, he wips out another one. What a beast! It is beyond me how he gets it up to that speed.

PS: What company makes those practice kits? I really need to get me one of those for my apartment.

Susperia, I think REMO makes those practice kits... someone here on HOD was selling one, Thomas Lang helped design one and they are VERY pricey... do a search.

Thanks Chris.
Here's what I found by Remo (slightly different kit though):

I also saw the Thomas Lang Kit, but that price is out of the question.
